Understanding and Managing Subdomains and Addon Domains

This guide explains the concepts of subdomains and addon domains and provides step-by-step instructions for creating and managing them through your hosting control panel (e.g., cPanel). Whether you're setting up a blog, a separate site, or organizing your web content, understanding these features will help you manage your domains effectively.

Understanding Subdomains and Addon Domains

What is a Subdomain?

A subdomain is a subsection of your primary domain, appearing before the main domain name in the URL. For example, blog.yourdomain.com is a subdomain of yourdomain.com. Subdomains allow you to:

  • Create separate sections of your website (e.g., shop.yourdomain.com for an online store).

  • Host different content or applications without needing a new domain.

  • Organize your site for better user experience and SEO.

What is an Addon Domain?

An addon domain is a fully functional domain added to your hosting account, allowing you to host multiple independent websites under one account. For example, you can host yourdomain.com and anotherdomain.com in the same hosting plan. Addon domains:

  • Appear as separate websites with their own content and structure.

  • Use separate folders in your hosting account (e.g., public_html/anotherdomain).

  • Share the same hosting resources (e.g., disk space, bandwidth) as your primary domain.

Key Difference: Subdomains are extensions of your primary domain (e.g., sub.yourdomain.com), while addon domains are distinct domains (e.g., anotherdomain.com) hosted in the same account.

Managing Subdomains

Step 1: Access Your Hosting Control Panel

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel (e.g., cPanel) provided by your hosting provider.

  2. Locate the Domains section and click Subdomains.

Step 2: Create a Subdomain

  1. In the Subdomain field, enter the subdomain name (e.g., blog for blog.yourdomain.com).

  2. Select the parent domain from the Domain dropdown (e.g., yourdomain.com).

  3. The Document Root will auto-populate (e.g., public_html/blog). Adjust if needed.

  4. Click Create to set up the subdomain.

Step 3: Verify and Use the Subdomain

  1. Upload content (e.g., HTML files, CMS files) to the subdomain’s document root using an FTP client (e.g., FileZilla) or File Manager.

  2. Visit the subdomain (e.g., https://blog.yourdomain.com) to confirm it’s working.

  3. Optionally, install a CMS (e.g., WordPress) via a one-click installer like Softaculous for the subdomain.

Step 4: Manage or Delete Subdomains

  1. In the Subdomains section, view the list of subdomains.

  2. To edit, click Manage to modify the document root or redirect settings.

  3. To delete, click Remove and confirm. Note: This deletes the subdomain but not the files in its document root.

Managing Addon Domains

Step 1: Access Your Hosting Control Panel

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel (e.g., cPanel).

  2. Locate the Domains section and click Addon Domains.

Step 2: Create an Addon Domain

  1. In the New Domain Name field, enter the addon domain (e.g., anotherdomain.com).

  2. The Subdomain and Document Root fields will auto-populate (e.g., anotherdomain and public_html/anotherdomain). Adjust if needed.

  3. Check Create an FTP account if you want a separate FTP user for this domain.

  4. Click Add Domain to complete the setup.

Step 3: Configure DNS for Addon Domains

  1. Update the addon domain’s DNS settings at your domain registrar:

    • Set the nameservers to match your hosting provider’s nameservers, or

    • Create an A record pointing to your hosting account’s IP address.

  2. Allow 24-48 hours for DNS propagation.

  3. Verify the domain works by visiting https://anotherdomain.com.

Step 4: Verify and Use the Addon Domain

  1. Upload content to the addon domain’s document root (e.g., public_html/anotherdomain) using FTP or File Manager.

  2. Optionally, install a CMS (e.g., Joomla) via a one-click installer for the addon domain.

  3. Test the site to ensure it loads correctly.

Step 5: Manage or Delete Addon Domains

  1. In the Addon Domains section, view the list of addon domains.

  2. To edit, click Manage to modify the document root or redirect settings.

  3. To delete, click Remove and confirm. Note: This removes the addon domain but not its files.
